The casket was used for storing highly prized betel nut, which was chewed ritually by high ranking Indonesian officials and adopted by settlers from the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC). Made from tortoise shell and having Rococo silver mounts, the box fitted with a chain to keep the lid open and a substantial lock to the front. The
