A gig is a boat used on naval ships as the captain's taxi. During the era of wooden ships, it was smal and light thus the canvas hull. It was usually crewed by 5 oarsmen and a coxswain. Generally, the oarsmen sat one to a seat, but each only rowed a single oar on alternating sides. I inherited this from my Uncle George and it predates me as I remember it in his
